Truckee Nordic dominates relay

Other schools might have a faster skier or two, but the Truckee school teams showed their incredible depth at the CNISSF Relay Races at Auburn Ski Club last Friday.

While the fastest times of the day were posted by Dominic Henriques of North Tahoe High and Natalie Joffe of Marin Academy, the Truckee school teams took first in five out of the six division races, with Mammoth winning the Middle School race.

Using a three-person relay format, with each racer skiing three kilometers (middle school racers skied 1 km.), Truckee High dominated the field. In the girls’ varsity, the team of Junior Olympians from last March – Kara LaPoint, Whitney Prosor and Maisha Goodpaster – cruised to win in a time of 28 minutes, 24 seconds, beating Marin’s team of Natalie and Gabrielle Joffe (with older sister Natalie skiing both the “scramble” and “anchor” legs). The junior varsity Truckee girls’ teams went 1-2, with the team of Sarah Clark, Rachel Waller and Kati Jones winning easily.

The Truckee boys scored 1-2 in the varsity, while the JV boys went 1-2-3. The team of Matthew Gelso, Robby Beno, and Joaquin Goodpaster skied to a first place finish in 25 minutes, 17 seconds. The JV Boys were even more dominant, with the team of Ben Kantz, Tyler Wright, and Ben Van Blarigan winning by over a three minute margin.

In the Middle School division, the Mammoth girls scored the only win of the day by a visiting school, with the team of Dayna Mead, Sophie Leonard and Dayna Stimson taking top honors over Sierra Mountain’s Emily Stewart, Kelsey Dion, and Bernie Nelson, despite Nelson having the fastest time of the day for the girls. In the boys division, the Sierra Mountain boys team of Jordan Nadell, Will Prosor, and Daniel Gelso scored an easy win over the nearest competitor.

Mark Nadell is the Far West Nordic Administrator.
