Truckee Pop Warner football team wins regional championship

by LARA MULLIN, Sierra Sun

Combining two groups of 10- to 12-year old boys on one team is a tall order. Producing a cohesive, winning team with these 30 members is an even bigger task. But Truckee Pop Warner football coaches Jared Sahlberg, Terry Cordell, Angelo Tenorio and Michael Cramer managed to lead the Truckee Pee Wee squad to victory this year, marking the first time a Wolverine team has ever advanced to regional competition.

Starting the season with a fierce, experienced offense, coach Sahlberg admited “our defense was still coming together.” By the end of the season however, the Wolverines were 9-2, giving up only six points in the playoffs – not bad for a new defensive unit. The boys dominated regular league play, emerging 6-2 before advancing to the playoffs. In the first round, the Wolverines clobbered Winnemuca 33-0 and moved on to the Sage Brush Empire Championships in Reno, where they defeated North Tahoe in an equally one-sided 39-0 win.

A celebratory Thanksgiving was sealed with the team’s final win over Rogue Valley 34-6 in the Pacific Northwest Regionals, crowning the Wolverines regional champions. Approximately half of this year’s team will be eligible to return next year, promising an equally tough Wolverine roster in 2001.
