Truckee routs Fernley 50-0 in Div. 1 opener

ERICK STUDENICKA

In Tahoe-Truckee High School’s first “real” game of the season, senior running back Rudy Cross had an “unreal” performance, gaining 230 yards on the ground as the Wolverines easily defeated Fernley 50-0 in both teams’ league opener.

“It was good timing to have a big game in the league opener and my offensive line opened up huge holes,” Cross said. “It all came together at the right time.”

Cross opened the scoring on the Wolverines first play from scrimmage, taking the ball 79 yards for the score.

“Rudy’s touchdown set the tone for the rest of the day,” said Wolverine head coach Bob Shaffer. “For a small runner, he’s proven to be strong and elusive.”

Before the first half was over, Cross added touchdown runs of 41 and two yards.

Combined with Spencer Archer’s 13-yard touchdown pass reception from Chris Gerdin, Truckee had a 29-0 halftime lead.

“Fernley was playing with eight men on the line of scrimmage, so once our runners got by the line it became a footrace,” Shaffer said. “Basically, we beat them with long runs.”

Shaffer said the Wolverines’ offense took the steam out of the Vaqueros before the halftime gun.

“The rapid-fire offense tired them out even before the second half began,” Shaffer said. “They had their shoulder pads off and looked tired even during halftime.”
