TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; With the squiggle of a pen and a smile, Annie Reiswig and Aleigh Krug inked their college sports futures to paper Wednesday.

The Truckee seniors signed National Letters of Intent to play Division I volleyball and basketball, respectively, at Miami University (of Ohio) and Portland State during a mini press conference set up in front of the school’s trophy case.

About 20 family members and friends gathered around the makeshift podium and#8212; a table with a red Truckee blanket draped over it and#8212; most of them armed with cameras as the seniors basked in the moment.

Fellow Truckee senior Jesse McGinley sat between Krug and Reiswig to celebrate her soccer scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

and#8220;I’m pretty excited. I’m proud of all of us for getting through and moving on,and#8221; said McGinley, a goalie who gave up playing for the Wolverines before last season to devote her time to club soccer in Sacramento. and#8220;It was kind of awkward for me because I didn’t have anything to sign yet, but it was all right.and#8221;

McGinley said she’ll sign her letter Feb. 1 to play at the Division I school on an athletic scholarship.

Reiswig, who was preparing to leave for Las Vegas with her Wolverines to defend their state volleyball championship this weekend, said she’s thrilled about the opportunity to play at Miami University. The college is located in Oxford, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati.

and#8220;I’m very excited. I can’t wait to get there,and#8221; Reiswig said. and#8220;I’ve already visited the campus twice, and I love it. I was really nervous (to sign the letter), but I was also really excited to do it and get it over with.and#8221;

A 6-foot outside hitter, Reiswig has proven herself a dominant force for both her Wolverines and her club team, Silver State 17-Black out of Carson City.

and#8220;I think she will do fantastically (in college),and#8221; said Justin Malley, who’s coached Reiswig the past three years in club. and#8220;There’s a whole nother level to her game that college will bring out in her.and#8221;

Miami University issued a press release shortly after Reiswig signed her letter, which included a quote from her new coach, Carolyn Condit.

and#8220;Annie Reiswig is a fine athlete and strong jumper,and#8221; Condit said in the release. and#8220;This combination makes her a very talented left side attacker and blocker. Her solid passing and defensive skills already has her tabbed to be a six rotation player for our team.and#8221;

Reiswig earned first-team All-State recognition each of the past two years.

Krug, a 6-foot-3 post player with deft footwork, said she also was glad to put her signing behind her.

and#8220;I’m so excited it’s finally here. I’ve been waiting for it for a long time,and#8221; she said.

Krug had options, as both Saint Mary’s College and Utah State offered her scholarships, she said. She originally was leaning toward Saint Mary’s.

and#8220;I thought it was my school until I went to Portland State. On the first visit I fell in love. It was a hard decision, but I think I made the right choice,and#8221; Krug said, explaining that she also liked the coaching staff and players at Portland State. and#8220;I just thought I’d fit in well in their program. And I like Oregon in general, too.and#8221;

Aside from her family, Krug’s longtime basketball coach, Geoff Stephens, was on hand for the occasion. Stephens coached Krug on her middle school and junior varsity teams, and he will again after recently taking over as head coach of the varsity girls’ program.

and#8220;It’s been just terribly exciting to watch her grow the last five or six years,and#8221; Stephens said of Krug, who was voted to the 3A All-State first team her junior season. and#8220;She’s been a great work in progress, and I look for her to do big things at the next level.and#8221;
