The Truckee boys received a postseason little help from an unlikely source.

Thanks to South Tahoe, which played visiting Sparks to a 3-3 tie on Thursday, the Wolverines clinched the No. 1 seed in the Northern Division I-A regional tournament at Fallon this Friday and Saturday.

Truckee and Sparks both finished the regular season 14-1-1 in league play, splitting their two meetings. But the Wolverines earned the higher seed based on the tiebreaker format.

As such, the top-seeded Wolverines will open the regional tournament with a semifinal against fourth-seeded Elko (7-8-1) on Friday at 1 p.m. Truckee defeated Elko twice during the regular season, 3-0 and 4-0.

“They’re a good possession-style team. They like to pass the ball around, kind of like us,” Truckee coach Casey Eberhardt said of the Indians. “If we don’t come out and take care of business, they’re the type of team where anything can happen. They’ll play hard to the final whistle.”

The loser is eliminated from the postseason, while the winner earns a state berth and advances to the regional final Saturday at noon.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Sparks will face third-seeded South Tahoe (12-3-1) in a rematch Friday at 3 p.m.

“South Tahoe started off slow, but they’ve come on strong,” Eberhardt said. “It will be interesting to see what happens Friday.”

Truckee got in one final tune-up on Saturday, when they routed visiting Fernley 13-0 on senior farewell.

Rolando Zarate and Gabby Serna scored two goals apiece as the Wolverines built an 8-0 by the half.

David Martinez, Eddie Cortez, Manuel Sarabia, Alex Colomenares, Nathan Ariza, Jake Lahr, Will Krengel, Steven Lopez and Oscar Martinez each contributed one goal.
