State championship, Saturday 10 a.m.
The Truckee girls soccer team will contend for a state title this weekend — but as a No. 2 seed.
In a rematch of last year’s regional final, second-seeded South Tahoe edged the top-seeded Wolverines 1-0 in the Northern Division I-A championship in Elko on Friday.
The loss means Truckee will face Faith Lutheran, the top Southern seed, in the semifinal round of the state tournament this Friday in South Lake Tahoe. The Vikings will square off against No. 2 Southern seed Spring Valley on the other side of the bracket.
In the regional championship, South Tahoe senior Kenya Maltase broke a scoreless tie with the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute.
The Wolverines had to fight to get that far, as they eked out a 2-1 overtime win over fourth-seeded Fallon in the regional semifinal.
Truckee took a 1-0 lead on a Fallon own-goal midway through the first half. But the Greenwave scored five minutes later, and the teams went to overtime knotted at 1-1.
Two minutes into the overtime period, however, Truckee junior Zareli Villa scored the game winner to secure a state berth.
