Truckee soccer | Girls use Galena tournament as and#8216;growing experience’

Sun Staff report

The Truckee girls’ soccer team finished 1-3 in the season-opening Howell Memorial Tournament over the weekend, with one of the losses coming in a shootout against 4A Reed.

Truckee lost to Elko, 1-0, before playing Reed to a 3-3 tie in regulation and then losing in the shootout. The Wolverines then defeated Faith Lutheran, 1-0, and lost to Galena, 1-0, to end the tourney.

First-year Truckee head coach Katie Jamison said the Wolverines used the tournament as a tune-up as they learn to play together with a largely new crop of players.

and#8220;This year we have a few returners with many new additions, so this tournament was very much of a growing experience,and#8221; Jamison said.

Against Elko, the Wolverines maintained control of the first half of the game but struggled to keep up in the second half. Truckee goalie Cassandra Sawyer performed well, said Jamison.

After being shut out by the Indians, senior forward Shauna Day recorded the Wolverines’ first goal against Reed on a blast from 40 yards out. Ali Haines scored the second and third goals, with Serena Dill picking up the assist on the third.

Jamison said the Wolverines held their own until the last minute of the game, when Reed tied it up to force the shootout. Gina Bauerline held off two shots by Reed, while Shelby Matthews, Olivia Duner and Haines all scored in the shootout.

In Truckee’s win against Faith Lutheran, passing greatly improved as the Wolverines controlled the field throughout most of the game. Melissa Cardoza scored the only goal off of a deflection from a Faith Lutheran defender.

Truckee was unable to respond to Galena’s one goal in the finale.
