The Truckee softball team ran into some tough competition in its opening Division I-A series at Fernley this past Friday and Saturday.

The Vaqueros, who last year won the Northern region title and finished runner-up in the state championship, did not allow a run.

Truckee senior Karina Nunez had Truckee’s only hit in Friday’s game as Fernley pitchers Taelyne Phillips and Megan Falin combined to pitch the shutout.

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Fernley pitchers Courtney Dunn and Justina Hawley also held the Wolverines to one hit, which came off the bat of sophomore Danielle Jackson.

The Wolverines managed four hits in the series finale against Hawley and Brooke Chapin — one apiece by Ellie Simpson, Katie Fisher, Marisol Rocha and Anna Hudson.

Simpson and Jackson pitched for the Wolverines.

Up next, Truckee is scheduled to play a league series at defending state champion Fallon this Friday and Saturday.
