Truckee softball: Wolverines drop a pair to end league play

The Wolverines dropped both ends of their league doubleheader at Yerington on Saturday by scores of 11-0 and 6-4. With the losses, Truckee dropped to 5-13 in league and 9-18 overall.

Game 1 was all Yerington, as the Lions scored two in the first, three in the second and six in the third while shutting out the Wolverines.

Truckee hitters could only scratch out three hits, one each by Cindy Brenes, Rachel Zissimos and Kati Murphy.

Game 2 was a bit of dejà-vu for the Wolverines from their game with the Lions at Truckee on Wednesday, when Yerington scored six runs in the seventh inning to win 8-7.

Saturday’s game began with a Lion run in the first. In the third, Truckee’s Ashley McKechnie reached on an error and was followed by a Natalya Jones single to left. Stacy Brenes then drilled a two-RBI triple to right field to put the Wolverines up 2-1.

Like Wednesday, Truckee expanded its lead in the sixth. Singles by Natalya Jones and Tracy Pearson followed by a bases-loaded walk by Kaycie Jones and an Amber Davy sacrifice fly gave the Wolverines a 4-1 lead.

But also like Wednesday, the Lions followed up Truckee’s big inning with a big inning of their own, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Lions shut down the Wolverines in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 6-4 victory.
