Truckee softball: Wolverines finish 1-2 at Spring Creek

Provided to the SunTruckee junior Kaycie Jones connects for a two-run home run in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Spring Creek.

The Wolverines lost two of three games at Spring Creek on Friday and Saturday to fall to 4-3 in the Northern 3A and 7-7 overall.

In the first game on Friday, Spartans pitcher Jordan Garcia threw at no-hitter with 16 strikeouts en route to a 2-0 Spring Creek win. Only three Truckee hitters reached base, all when hit by a pitch.

Truckee pitcher Stacy Brenes held the Spartans at bay for four innings, but Spring Creek pushed across a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory.

In the second game of the series Saturday morning, Garcia took the circle again, and again dominated the Wolverines, striking out 17.

Supporting her cause was a Spring Creek offense that put two unearned run across in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.

But after breaking Garcia’s no-hit streak in the first inning with a double, Brenes beat out an infield single in the fourth. Seven pitches later, Truckee’s Kaycie Jones hit a two-run dinger to left-center to tie the score at two.

Wolverine pitcher Rachel Zissimos kept the Spartans at bay into the fifth when Spring Creek combined a hit and a couple of stolen bases to plate a run. The Spartans put across an insurance run in the sixth on three consecutive hits to seal a 4-2 victory.

Having clinched the series, Spring Creek threw its relief pitcher in the final game Saturday afternoon while Brenes pitched for Truckee.

Truckee took advantage, exploding for eight runs in the second inning. Rachel Zissimos lit the fuse, hitting a two-run, line-drive home run over the left field fence with a runner aboard to begin the inning. After Truckee batted around, the Spartans put Garcia back in, in an attempt to keep the game close.

Spring Creek answered with three runs in the second, and another run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Truckee held a 10-6 lead entering the bottom of the seventh and appeared headed to victory after Brenes put down the first two Spartan batters on consecutive pitches.

But Spring Creek wasn’t going down without a fight, collecting two singles before Garcia again lifted the Spartans with a three-run homer to bring Spring Creek to within one run.

Truckee’s Cindy Brenes ended the threat when she reeled in a high fly ball to center to preserve the 10-9 victory.

Natalya Jones, Kaycie Jones, Rachel Zissimos and Katelyn Gadsby led Truckee’s offense with two hits each. Zissimos added four RBIs as well.
