Truckee softball: Wolverines split with Sparks, win season series
TRUCKEE ” Junior catcher Kaycie Jones delivered in the clutch by blasting a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Wolverines to a 6-4 win in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader against Sparks.
Rachel Zissimos pitched a complete game for Truckee, striking out six and helping the Wolverines salvage a split after they dropped the first game 12-2.
Truckee (5-4 league, 8-8 overall) took two of three games against Sparks (1-5 league) in the season series, winning the first contest 19-8 on the road March 18.
With the score knotted 4-4 in the bottom half of the sixth, Natalya Jones lined a single to right field to set the table for Kaycie Jones two batters later.
Protecting the plate with a two-strike count, the Truckee catcher squared up a pitch from Game 1 winner Sabrina Martinez, sending a rocket shot over the left-field fence to ignite her bench and give her team a two-run lead. The bomb was her second extra-base hit of the game, as she finished with three RBIs and two runs on a home run and triple.
The runs provided more than enough support for Zissimos, who forced two fly outs and a ground out while walking one in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
Zissimos helped her cause at the plate by going 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Natalya Jones also swung a hot bat, going 3 for 3 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs.
Sparks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a shaky top half of the first inning for the Wolverines. Truckee tied the score in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI triple off the bat of Natalya Jones and a sacrifice fly by Kaycie Jones.
Truckee added a third run in the second inning after leadoff hitter Ashley McKechnie drew a walk and scored on a double from Natalya Jones, then scored a fourth run in the third when Kaycie Jones tripled to right field and scored on a line-drive single by Zissimos.
Sparks fought back with a run in the fourth and another run in the fifth to tie the score at 4-4.
Martinez came on in relief with two runners on and no outs in the bottom half of the fourth. After walking Stacey Brenes to load the bases, Martinez got Kaycie Jones to hit a line drive to second base for a double play, then struck out Zissimos to end the threat. She struck out the side in the fifth before giving up the go-ahead home run the following inning.
Truckee shortstop and third baseman Amber Davy went 2 for 3 in the game and right fielder Katelyn Gadsby was 2 for 4. McKechnie drew three walks and scored two runs for the Wolverines.
The Railroaders pushed eight runs across the plate in the sixth inning of Game 1, then held the Wolverines scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to win by the 10-run mercy rule.
Martinez pitched all six innings for Sparks to earn the win, while Brenes threw 5 1/3 innings for Truckee in a losing effort. Kati Murphy pitched the final 2/3 innings for the Wolverines.
The game remained scoreless until Sparks touched Brenes for one run in the bottom of the third. Truckee tied the score the same inning when Kaycie Jones hit a hard one-hopper off the leg of Martinez, scoring McKechnie, then added its second and final run in the fourth when Gadsby hit a sacrifice fly to score Davy from third.
Sparks scored two runs in the third and another in the fourth before blowing the game open with eight runs in the sixth.
Truckee had eight hits in the game, led by 2-for-3 performances from Kaycie Jones (RBI) and Davy (triple, run). McKechnie went 2 for 4 with a run, while Zissimos and Miranda Baker each had a hit apiece.
