Truckee to celebrate Rahlves’ success

Truckee – Daron Rahlves, a Truckee local and Sugar Bowl Ski Ambassador, won the Super G World Championship race Jan. 30 in St. Anton, Austria. Rahlves will be returning home Saturday to a hero’s welcome.

Festivities, fireworks and music will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the downtown Truckee Train Depot. Rahlves will arrive at 7 p.m. to receive a decree of success from the people of Truckee presented by Truckee Mayor Don McCormick. Also, a proclamation written by Governor Gray Davis honoring the new World Champion’s achievements will be offered.

Last week, Rahlves beat two of the heavily favored Austrian team members who placed second and third.

“I skied really well up top, but I made a mistake in the middle,” he said, holding tightly to his gold medal, Atomic skis. “But, I kept fighting. I didn’t panic. I kept puttin’ ’em down the hill. I was aggressive.”

Rahlves added, “We’ve trained hard. We have a great organization – the coaches, the service techs, the support – and this is the reward for everything we’ve been doing.”
