Truckee trap team enjoying successful season
Truckee senior Jon Friesen and Alder Creek Middle School seventh-grader Justin Hoekman garnered podium finishes at the last two California Youth Shooting Sports Association (CYSSA) trap meets held in April at Coon Creek Trap and Skeet Club in Lincoln and the Auburn Gun Club in Auburn.
In the second and third series of the CYSSA, Friesen placed third at Lincoln and second at Auburn. In the Intermediate Entry Level Division, Hokeman placed first at Lincoln and second in Auburn.
There was tough competition at both of the meets with 260 participants in Lincoln and 140 in Auburn. With the addition of the scores from the rest of the JV and varsity squads, Truckee is in second place in the Senior Division.
The Truckee High trap team and Truckee Junior Shooters are part of 37 Northern/Central California teams — 19 high schools and 18 clubs.
The CYSSA introduces school-age youths in grades 12 and under to the clay target sports and to facilitate their continued involvement in the shooting sports. As a member of the CYSSA, the teams are focused on providing, promoting and perpetuating opportunities for young shooters to safely and enjoyably participate in a high-quality, team-based sport of trap shooting.
The Truckee trap team competes in the Senior Division (grades 9-12), which has two levels of competition, JV for first-year participants and varsity for those in their second, third or fourth years of participation. The Truckee Junior Shooters compete in the Intermediate Division (grades 6-8), which also includes two levels of competition.
While the Truckee trap team began in 2010 with 17 members, it has grown in popularity since and now boasts 30 members. All must carry a 3.0 GPA to participate in the meets. The Truckee Junior Shooters began this year.
“By the time these young shooters reach the ninth grade, they will be well seasoned and ready to be competitive at the high school level,” said head coach Tobe Stone.
Stone and fellow coach Dick Hadsell gained some additional coaching help this year with addition of Dan Engler, Brian Marsh and Chuck Avery, and junior coaches Wyatt Turner and Greg Engler.
From late January until mid June the teams travel to their home club, Capitol City Gun Club in Carson City to improve their skills. For more information contact Stone at 530-587-5599 or go to shootcyssa.com.
