Truckee volleyball | Wolverines competitive at High Sierra Invitational

Sun Staff report

The Truckee High volleyball team recorded its best-ever finish in the mostly large-school High Sierra Invitational at Galena this past weekend, placing ninth overall out of 36 teams.

The Wolverines began the tournament Friday with pool play against California schools Palo Alto, Roseville and Red Bluff, all of which are about three times the size of Truckee.

But the Wolverines held their own, defeating Roseville in straight sets, 26-24, 25-17, before losing to Palo Alto, 17-25, 8-25, and then beating Red Bluff, 25-20, 25-21.

The 2-1 start placed the Wolverines in the top half of the 36 teams right off the bat, setting them up for a couple of big challenges ahead.

On Saturday morning they took Ponderosa to three games but lost, 25-21, 17-25, 13-15. Truckee then beat Shasta quickly in two games to advance to the final 12 of the tournament, which included large-school powers Del Oro, Nevada Union, Manogue, St. Francis, Vista del Lago, Homestead and others.

Truckee played well in its final two matches but lost both in straight sets, 20-25, 16-25 against Homestead and 11-25, 11-25 against Vista del Lago.

The Wolverines are now 3-5 overall on the season.
