Truckee wrestling: Wolverines win dual against Incline

TRUCKEE and#8212; The Truckee wrestling team upset visiting Incline, 48-36, in a nonleague dual Tuesday.

and#8220;Incline is the defending (2A) state champs, so that was pretty impressive,and#8221; said Truckee head coach Danny Curtis, whose Wolverines lost in a dual at Incline last month. and#8220;Our young guys pulled through to get us the win.and#8221;

The coach was referring to freshman Matt Baumann, who pinned Incline’s Irvin Perez-Gomez in a 189-pound match, and junior Alex Engler, who pinned Alfredo Perez in a battle of 215-pounders.

and#8220;They both surprised the heck out of us,and#8221; said Truckee coach Ron Curtis. and#8220;I think that’s what won the match for us.and#8221;

In addition to the key wins by Engler and Baumann, Truckee junior captain Ricky Cooper defeated Jesus Hernandez by pin in overtime of an exciting, back-and-forth match at 119 pounds. With the win Cooper, who’s ranked second in the state in his weight class, improved to 14-2 on the season.

Ranked third in the state at 135 pounds, Truckee senior Kyle Mullen defeated Sean Fox handily in his match to improve to 11-3 on the year, while junior Dustin Gwerder improved to 17-3 with a pin against Miguel Portillo in a 152-pound match. Gwerder is ranked fifth in the state.

Truckee freshman Javier Virrey pinned Enrique Parra at 145 pounds to improve to 12-3, while sophomore Carlos Ramirez pinned Alfredo Parra at 160 pounds. Ramirez is now 8-1 and ranked eighth in the state; Virrey is 12-3 and ranked 11th.

Tyler Curtis (11-10, ranked 14th) also picked up a win for the Wolverines by forfeit, while Steven Baker (7-6, ranked fifth) lost to a tough Cody Feliciano in a 112-pound battle. Justin Carter and Cody Neill also wrestled against the Highlanders.
