Truckees Arek OConnell 2nd best in state

Truckee High junior Arek OConnell placed second in the 50-yard freestyle at the Nevada 4A State High School Swimming & Diving Championship at University of Nevada, Reno on Saturday.Entering as the No. 2 seed in the state in the event, OConnell swam a personal-best time of 22.04, and was edged only by No. 1-seeded Fritz Roepke of Reno High, who finished in 21.76.The state record in the 50 free stands at 20.81, set by Scott Evans in 1989, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.James Butler of Centennial High was third in 22.18, followed by Chris Dewey of Incline in 22.49. Eight swimmers the top three from Northern Nevada and the top five from the South competed in the race.OConnell set his previous best time in the 50 free (22.23) at the Northern 4A Regional Championship the previous weekend at Carson Aquatic Center, where he narrowly missed the cut in the 100 free by three-tenths of a second, finishing in 50.69.Roepke is the only swimmer OConnell placed runner-up to the entire season, said Truckee head coach Vicky Dewey, adding that she thinks OConnell has the potential to win state next year in both the 50 free and 100 free.
