Truckee’s Chelsea Holmes eighth in U.S. Cross Country Championships classic race

SUN VALLEY, Idaho and#8212; Cross country World Cup sprint powerhouse Kikkan Randall of Anchorage, Alaska, added a 16th U.S. Championship to her belt Sunday as she won the U.S. SuperTour Finals 30K classic technique race in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Truckee’s Chelsea Holmes from the Sugar Bowl Academy, who was the top woman in The Great Ski Race earlier this month, recorded a top-10 finish, as she placed eighth, 4 minutes and 54 seconds behind Randall’s time of 1:31:27.4.

A hard, fast track coupled with rays of sun shining down on the course made for a perfect day to end the 2011 U.S. Cross Country Championship series.

and#8220;We lucked out today. The boys had really tough conditions yesterday,and#8221; Randall said. and#8220;We’re all pretty psyched to wake up this morning and see clear blue skies and get out on the trails and find really nice hard and fast tracks. The wax stayed pretty consistent.and#8221;

Joining Randall on the podium was Sweden native Maria Graefnings in second and Jessie Diggins (Afton, Minn.) in third.

The U.S. SuperTour Finals resume Tuesday with the men’s and women’s prologue race.
