Truckee’s frosh football team returns

Truckee High had not fielded a freshman football team in several years. But with almost 30 players signing on for football last spring, a freshman team and schedule was formed, with Rick Wilson as head coach.

The first game of the season was on Aug. 31 at Surprise Stadium against Lovelock’s junior varsity team. It was not a defensive struggle, but the Truckee freshmen came out ahead, 33-30.

Highlights included long touchdown runs by quarterback Nate Hamill and linebacker Jackson Weed on an interception.

The freshmen traveled over Donner Summit on Sept. 7 to play Colfax. Although Colfax won, 14-12, the Wolverines played a great game on both sides of the ball.

The game concluded with Truckee putting together an impressive 80-yard drive, which ended in a turnover inside the 10-yard line as the clock ran out.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, the freshman team hosted Fernley at Surprise Stadium. Although Fernley was held to a 7-0 lead for most of the game, turnovers and big plays in the fourth quarter put Truckee on the losing end of a 27-0 game.

Logan Goode and Alex Cramer made interceptions, but Truckee could not capitalize. Kory Ricketts and Weed had some highlight plays on offense for the Wolverines.

The freshman team travels to Dayton today and hosts Lowry at 3 p.m. on Sept. 28.
