Truckee’s Morganne Murphy leads USA in World Junior Ski Cross

CARDRONA, New Zealand and#8212; Truckee skier Morganne Murphy led the USA on Saturday with a fifth-place finish in the FIS Junior World Freestyle Championships ski cross in Cardrona.

A crash in the semifinals was all that kept the 16-year-old Murphy out of the finals. She didn’t let it happen again, winning the small finals to take fifth.

and#8220;I was bummed about the run,and#8221; said Murphy, a junior at Forest Charter School in Truckee. and#8220;and#8230; But I made the best pass of my life and am so stoked about finishing fifth.and#8221;



Norway’s Didrik Bastian Juell won the men’s event while Fanny Smith of Switzerland took the women’s gold. Kyle Smaine of South Lake Tahoe just missed the top 10, finishing 11th, while Penn Lukens (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) was 19th.

and#8220;There were a lot of really good competitors here and#8212; high level,and#8221; said Smaine. and#8220;It was great to see how well ski cross is developing in the other countries.and#8221;



It was the second time ski cross has been on the program for the Junior World Championships.
