Two in a row for Truckee boys’ golf

In theory, golf is strictly an individual sport, but the Truckee High School boys are doing well with the team concept so far.

Fernley’s Matt Leestma won his second consecutive individual tournament, but Truckee won the team portion of the meet at Dayton Valley Golf Course on March 19 with a cumulative score of 416, six strokes better than second-place Lowry.

Kevin Waters and Tom Kokenge led the Wolverines to their second straight win with rounds of 79 and 81, respectively.

“We got an extra boost from Tommy, and Kevin is establishing himself as one of the league’s top golfers,” said Truckee head coach Jeff Froelich.

Waters has finished second in both tournaments, and Kokenge’s Dayton score was good for fourth. But Froelich has seen improvement in other players as well.

“Ian Casey, a new face on our six-man team shot a 90,” he said. “Not bad for his first varsity tournament. This exemplifies what we are hoping for – enough depth on our team where different members make significant contributions each week.”

Truckee has established a four-point lead (18) over second-place Lowry (14) in the race for the Northern 3A title. Yerington and Dayton are currently tied with 13 apiece.

On Thursday, Truckee plays at Lakeridge Golf Course at 8 a.m. in a tournament hosted by Bishop Manogue.
