Underdog spikers set for zone match

There are four teams in Division 1 3A volleyball, and the Tahoe-Truckee High School volleyball team is the fourth seed going into this weekend’s zone playoffs at Fernley.

On Saturday, North Tahoe, Spring Creek, Fernley and 1-7 Truckee will each vie for the top spot in the division and the chance to play in the state tournament the following weekend at Galena.

“Right now, we have a 50-50 shot,” said Truckee coach Maggie Shane. “But this is fun because all the other teams are scrambling.”

In fact, even if Truckee loses its first game, it will have another chance against the loser of the NT/Spring Creek match, because the tournament is double-elimination format.

Truckee lost to North Tahoe last week, but Shane said her team came out strong against them at first. She said TTHS and NT players often have a mental block due to the intense rivalry.

Should Truckee advance past the first two games, it would play two more Saturday to clinch the division title.

The Truckee/Fernley game begins at 12:30 p.m. at Fernley High School, immediately following the NT/Spring Creek match.

Games will follow; one at 4:15 p.m. and one at 6 p.m. for the title.
