Valeri Nix paces Highlanders in Yerington
The Incline track and field team competed along with 15 other Division I-A and Division III schools in the Yerington Relays this past Saturday.
Junior sprinter Valeri Nix led the way with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, posting a time of 18.49. Nix also placed fifth in the 400-meter dash, in 1:08.13, and was eighth in the 200 (29.66).
Incline junior Taylor Cook finished seventh in the 100 with a time of 14.24, while Kate Ballan was 13th in the 100 hurdles and 15th in the 300 hurdles, Serena Singh was 10th in the triple jump and 14th in the 100 hurdles, Mia Harbaugh was 13th in the long jump and 13th in the triple jump, and Kandace Dirga was 16th in the 100, 15th in the 200 and 14th in the 400.
On the boys’ side, Incline junior Will Cory finished seventh in the 400, recording a time of 55.03, and was 14th in the 200 and 21st in the 100. Kaelan Pugh threw the discus 75 feet, 6 inches.
The Fallon boys and Truckee girls took first place in the team competition. Yerington was the top-placing Division III team, in fourth, and was followed by Pershing County in fifth and North Tahoe tied for sixth. In the girls competition, Yerington also topped the DIII field in second, while North Tahoe was next in sixth, followed by Smith Valley in ninth.
The Highlanders are scheduled to compete in the 42nd Annual Fallon Elks Invitational on Saturday.
