Varsity boys blow out Fernely

The Wolverines Friday night looked like a team fighting to secure a playoff spot, and that didn’t help the cause of visiting Fernely High.

The game turned into a blowout in the second quarter, as Truckee began dominating every facet of the game. The lead fluctuated from between 20 and 35 points, enabling Truckee coach Keith Crawford to get every player in the game.

“It was good to get the guys in who haven’t had much of a chance,”

Crawford said. “It was a good win.”

Paul Tierney, Drew Stewart and Kevin Embertson led Truckee with nine points each, and Jeff Hansen scored eight. After that the scoring numbers were balanced, as nearly every player jumped on the basket bandwagon.

In order to make the playoffs, with three games remaining, winning is vital for the varsity boys, Crawford said. The Wolverines are 8-11 overall and 6-7 in league. If the team loses one of its three final games there will be only a slight chance of competing in the postseason.

“Winning out is the best option,” Crawford said. “We’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Tierney said he understands the importance of the victory, as well as the importance of achieving three more.

“This was a big win,” Tierney said. “We’ve been pretty motivated because coach has put a fire in us. I think we have a really good chance (to make playoffs). Once we get in, you never know what will happen. We’re definitely a threat.”

Austin Chaney was Fernely’s high-point man with 14. Matt Leestma chipped in seven points and Jose Hernandez six.
