Victory over ROP showcases Wolverine football skills

Dan Savickas

The Truckee High School varsity football team won in its closest victory of the year over Right of Passage High School 52-26 on Saturday.

“It was a great first half if you were a spectator,” said Head Coach Bob Shaffer. “It looked like a track meet with both teams running up and down the field. It seemed like whoever had the ball at the end of the second quarter was going to be in the lead,” Shaffer added.

At the end of the first half the Wolverines lead by two points, 28-26.

“We mad a few adjustments at the half,” Shaffer said. “We challenged the defense to not allow any more points.” A challenge the defense accepted and accomplished.

“Our conditioning program showed up in the second half and our opponents were worn down while we still had plenty left,” Shaffer said.

“They (ROP) made some big plays, other times we just didn’t play very well,” Shaffer said.

Quarterback Paul Tierney completed nine out of 13 passes for 216 yards, two touchdown passes and an interception. Tierney has 878 yards passing on the season and eight touchdown passes.

Jamie Maehler had three catches for 152 yards and one touchdown. Shane Wright had one catch for 1 yards and one touchdown. Mike Hackley had three catches for 33 yards.

Nick Smith lead the ground attack with nine carries for 89 yards and three touchdowns. Hackley had eight carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. Lupe Lopez ran in for another touchdown.

The Wolverines head in to this weekend’s homecoming game undefeated against 3-0 Lowry.
