Volleyball falls to Lakers in regionals

After two decisive victories in the regular season over North Tahoe, the volleyball team dropped the third in the first round of the Northern 3A regionals Saturday.

Losing in three sets, 10-15, 6-16 and 13-15, the squad had trouble focusing. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held at Bishop Manogue, but the weekend storm left their gymnasium flooded, and the tournament was moved to Friday morning.

“They don’t like to play at Dayton. It’s a mental thing,” Coach Maggie Shane said. “I think they had that in the forefront of their minds.”

On-court communication wasn’t as good as it has been in the past.

“They usually can tell who is going to cover what, it’s like they forgot to turn that part on,” Shane said. “They were nervous. And I don’t know why, it’s a really talented team.”

North Tahoe went on to give Manogue, first in the north, a run for their money, taking the game to five sets, 11-15, 16-18, 15-9, 15-6 and 15-13. Manogue took first with a four-set victory over second placed Dayton, 15-9, 3-15, 15-11, 15-11.

“Dana Brooks was her good, solid self, she was really consistent,” Shane said. “My other seniors, mentally, were trying too hard, so there was no team flow on the court.”

Jessie Turner led the season with 105 kills and 18 blocks, Amber Harder had 57 kills and 11 aces, Laura Ford had 50 kills and 13 aces, Jacqueline Diaz had 42 kills and 14 blocks and Julie Hill led with 15 aces.

The loss puts the Wolverines at 7-8 for the season’s record.
