Wolverine awarded tennis scholarship

Truckee High senior Gabriel Cooper has been named first-place winner of the 2006 Reno/Tahoe High School Senior Tennis Player Scholarship Award.

“I’m really excited,” Cooper said of winning the $500 scholarship. “I’ve always loved tennis, and it’s nice to know you can get a scholarship for something you like doing.”

A four-year Truckee tennis player, Cooper said he will attend UC Berkeley next year, where he plans to walk on to the university’s tennis team.

“It’s gonna be nice in college because you can play year-round,” he said.

Cooper, who has a 4.2 grade point average, said he has applied for more than 20 scholarships. So far he has received four: From the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association, Truckee Masonic Lodge and the Northern California Scholarship Foundation. He hopes to get more.

“I’m still in need of them for college,” Cooper said.

Reno/Tahoe Community Tennis Coordinator Christy Funk, who also works as the facilitator for the scholarship Cooper received, said the senior was chosen mainly because of the “outstanding” essay he submitted for the award.

“He had a wonderful essay, and he was judged very highly on that,” Funk said, adding that Cooper scored in the upper 30s out of 40 points possible. “Whatever he did in high school tennis really made an impact to write such a good essay.

“He’s being acknowledged in this tennis community and it means he is someone his peers can look up to.”
