Wolverine golfers off to state tournament

Lara Mullin

In their final match of regular League play Saturday, the Wolverine golfers learned two vital lessons that they will carry with them to the State Tournament this weekend: every stroke counts, and it feels really good to come out on top.

Truckee finally won their first League match at Lahontan, besting deep teams from Manogue and Lowry that have defeated the Wolverines all season.

“We were a little bit intimidated playing the Miners and the Buckaroos and it showed in our play throughout the season. Now, recent history shows that we can beat them both and the team finally believes that heading into Pahrump,” said Coach Jeff Froelich.

A mere two strokes stood between the first place Wolverines and third place Lowry, as the score totals were 415 for Truckee, Manogue at 416 and 417 strokes for Lowry.

Junior Mark Lundbeck led the victorious Wolverines with a 77, capturing first place individually. Lundbeck tied with Ben Bryson of Lowry and the Miners leading golfer Chris Daossulis, but was given the win when the holes were rated by difficulty and scores were compared.

Jason Waters also played a strong round with 79 strokes, followed by Jarrett Bower with 85, Dave Brooks with 86 and Ryan Stock with an 88. The Wolverines finished the season in third place in division standings ahead of the fourth place Lakers and behind the League leading Miners and second place Buckaroos.

The top four teams and five additional players will travel to Pahrump for the State Championships this weekend.
