Wolverines, Lakers to clash in Truckee Basketball Classic
Eight varsity teams from California and Nevada are slated to play in the inaugural Truckee Basketball Classic this Thursday through Saturday in the Truckee gym.
The tournament, put on by second-year Truckee coach Sky Nelson, features competitive schools from all divisions, including North Tahoe and state runner-up Incline from Nevada’s Division III.
Other schools include Division I McQueen, which will square off against Incline in the opening round, Dayton of Truckee’s Division I-A, Mesa Verde (Citrus Heights) and Colfax from California, and White Pine (Ely) of the Division III. Nelson said he hopes to grow the annual tournament in the coming years.
“It’s always difficult the first year to get all the schools here,” he said. “But I’m sure it will get easier.”
Incline and McQueen will tip off the action Thursday at 3 p.m., with Dayton and Mesa Verde following at 4:30 and Colfax and White Pine at 6. Historic rivals Truckee and North Tahoe, who did not face each other last season, will clash in the nightcap starting at 7:30.
Games continue at the same times Friday, with the winner between Incline and McQueen facing the winner between Dayton and Mesa Verde at 6, and the winner between Colfax and White Pine meeting either Truckee or North Tahoe at 7:30.
The tournament concludes with the championship game Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Each team is guaranteed three games.
