Wolverines split with North Tahoe to earn home field playoff edge

ERICK STUDENICKA

With the Division I title at stake and the Tahoe-Truckee High School boys’ varsity baseball team leading by eight runs, one wouldn’t expect the North Tahoe baseball team to go down without a fight.

And that’s almost exactly what happened, as the deciding game of the Division I regular season between Truckee and North Tahoe turned ugly before the Wolverines could defeat the Lakers 13-3 in the second game of the day to win the Division I regular season title with a 9-1 record and earn the right to host the Division I tournament that begins tomorrow (May 16). All told, three Laker players would be ejected from the game, including two pitchers who hit Wolverine batters and a baserunner who intentionally spiked Truckee’s Kris Rendon on a play at second base.

With North Tahoe’s 10-2 win in the opener giving the Wolverines their first loss in the league season, the second game of the doubleheader became the deciding game of the season, with the winner taking the regular season title and hosting the league tournament.

After Truckee took a 8-0 lead in the third inning on a home run by rightfielder Dan DeCoite, Laker pitcher Jason Diaz, the winning pitcher in the opening game, was warned for throwing inside with Truckee catcher Jason Shelton at bat.
