The Truckee baseball team closed out the regular season last weekend with a trio of dominant wins at home against Lowry, and will now travel to Elko for the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association 3A Northern League Baseball Championship tournament.

With the three-game sweep, the Wolverines finish the season with a league record of 24-3 for first place in the Northern League by four games.

Truckee opened the series last Friday with a 10-3 win, which marked the team’s first home game of the season due to a heavy winter season. Senior Derek LaFerriere hit a home run and a double as part of three hits and three RBIs during the contest. Senior Spencer Edmondson finished with two hits and an RBI. Senior Jake Streit went all seven innings and allowed seven hits and one earned run while striking out six batters.

The teams met up the following day and Truckee’s offense exploded for 15 runs in three innings. Junior pitcher Deacon Mehler was perfect with no hits or walks and seven strikeouts while facing the minimum of nine batters during Truckee’s three inning win via the 15-run rule.

From the plate, LaFerriere belted another home run and finished with two hits and four RBIs. Senior Sawyer Thompson also hit a home run. Junior Tyler Estabrook hit a pair of doubles and senior Shane Poe hit a triple and a double to drive in five runs. Poe finished the regular season with a team-high five triples.

Truckee then closed the series with Lowry by taking 10-0 win after five innings of play via the 10-run rule.

The Wolverines benefitted from another dominant performance from the mound. Sophomore pitcher Timmy Reeve tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts during five innings of work.

From the plate, senior Elliot Rost finished the game with a team high three hits and two RBIs.

LaFerriere hit his third home run of the series and sixth in the past nine games. LaFerriere finished the season with team highs in home runs (8), hits (39), RBIs (42) and batting average (.476). He’s also tied with two other players for the most doubles on the season with 10.

Truckee will now go into the league tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2012. The Wolverines will await the winner of No. 4 Elko and No. 5 South Tahoe for a second round game.

Truckee lost the Northern League tournament last season, falling twice to Elko, including in the championship game. The Wolverines went on to avenge those two defeats by topping the Indians twice during the state tournament on the way to winning the state title.

This season, Truckee swept Elko by a combined score of 18-5. The Wolverines did, however, drop a 4-3 contest to South Tahoe in the final game of that series.

The first two rounds of the six-team, double-elimination tournament will be played on Thursday, May 9, at Elko High School (results not available at time of print). The following rounds will be contested on Friday, and the championship game will be held Saturday.

The winner and runner-up of the league tournament will qualify for the state tournament, which will be held May 16-18 in Mesquite, Nevada.
