Wrestlers off to impressive start

LARA MULLIN, Sierra Sun

On Dec. 9, wrestlers from all over Northern California and Nevada traveled to Alturas, Calif. for the Modoc Tournament. After a weekend of close matches, the Tahoe-Truckee Wolverines emerged on top, proving they will be a strong contender in NIAA/U.S. Bank Nevada 3A league standings this season.

Ian Wren, at 145 pounds, wrestled impressively, remaining undefeated for the season with a 13-0 record. Wren, who has been wrestling for over 12 years, leads the small Truckee squad with eleven pins. James Curtis, in the 171-pound weight class, also displayed agility and quickness bringing his record to 12-1, with eight pins for the season.

The absence of consistent wrestler Jesse Helsdon impaired the Truckee team, allowing for weight class gaps that make a high overall team score more difficult. Despite the loss of three wrestlers due to injury and illness, the team wrestled hard individually to establish themselves as a early season force in 3A play.

Dennis Graham finished the weekend 5-2 with two pins, Rich Sausser currently stands at 7-4 with three pins, Shane Gorman is 5-6, Marcus Waters 8-5 and Brian Kendrick is currently 2-0 with two pins.

The team will travel to Susanville this weekend for the Lassen Dual Tournament, and are working on getting the team healthy and prepared for the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno, Dec. 28 and 29.
