XC races off and running at Northstar

Staff reportsMountain bikers of all levels can test their endurance every Thursday night at Northstar in the Evening Cross Country Mountain Bike Race Series, happening every week from July 14 through Aug. 18.”Win, lose or draw, it’s a good time,” said Dan Krenicki, a Truckee resident and first-year pro mountain bike racer. “It’s just real relaxed. Very family-oriented atmosphere. And it’s pretty much all local competitors who show.” Riders will climb and descend through Northstar’s mountain bike park on one of three courses, ranging from six to 14 miles. Courses vary from week to week and the number of laps are determined by the racer’s class. Helmets are required for all riders but there is no NORBA license required. All races begin at 6 p.m. at the bottom of the Village Express lift. Race categories are Men’s Beginner, Men’s Sport, Men’s or Junior Expert, Women’s Beginner, Women’s Sport and Women’s Expert. The entry fee is $10 per night or $50 for the series. Registration will be held at the bottom of the Village Express lift from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. the evening of the race. There will be a raffle held every week for all racers. Raffle prizes include mountain bike park passes, Smith sunglasses and FOX T-shirts and hats.”Probably about 60 percent of the competitors win prizes,” Krenicki said, “and they’re cool prizes. It makes it really fun.” Awards will be presented at the end of the season for overall winners based on cumulative points earned throughout the series. Racers must compete in five of the six races to qualify for the end-of-season awards.
