Yavapai moves into final four

Truckee High graduate J.R. Murphy’s Yavapai College baseball team routed Potomac State College 13-3 Wednesday in the NJCAA World Series.

The win puts the Roughriders in the final four of the double-elimination tournament being held in Grand Junction, Colo.

The game remained close for the first few innings, with Potomac leading 2-1 after three. The Roughriders then exploded for 11 runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take a commanding 12-3 lead.

Yavapai’s Kevin Gossage, nephew of former major-league pitcher Goose Gossage, ended the game and eliminated Potomac from the tournament in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to right field, setting into effect the 10-run rule. Gossage tied a JuCo record the previous day by hitting three home runs against Butler Community College.

The Roughriders, now 2-1 in the JuCo (junior college) World Series, will face the loser between Wallace State and Walters State Thursday at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. PST). Murphy, Yavapai’s ace pitcher, will get the start.

Murphy got the no decision in 6-5 loss to Wallace State on Sunday. He threw 8 1/3 innings in front of 9,848 fans, striking out nine and allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks.
