An earlier version of this story indicated the man was 52 years old at time of death. On Tuesday, Nevada County Coroner Robert Bringolf said HArrington indeed is 51. The Sun regrets the error.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — A 51-year-old Truckee man died last Thursday after flipping the 4-wheeler he was driving into Prosser Creek Reservoir and becoming trapped underneath.

Units from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Truckee Fire Protection District and California Highway Patrol responded at about noon Thursday to the reservoir north of Truckee, NCSO Capt. Paul Schmidt said Friday.

The man — identified Tuesday as Robert Harrington of Truckee — was driving a RZR ATV vehicle near the Prosser shore when he “ended up flipping over in Prosser creek, most likely drowning,” Schmidt said.

While Harrington apparently drowned, the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology reports, he said. Harrington was alone at the time of the incident.

“We got a call from someone saying they saw an overturned ATV in the water and a dog standing on the shore and staring out at the water,” Schmidt said. “We don’t know for sure how long he was under water.”

On Tuesday, Nevada County Coroner Robert Bringolf said Harrington’s death is “consistent with drowning,” although that won’t be confirmed until toxicology returns.
