Mega Knights make North Tahoe soccer history
TAHOE CITY, Calif. – For many youth soccer teams, winter weather means canceled practices or a move indoors. But when the Mega Knights, North Tahoe’s U14 American Youth Soccer Organization team, were unable to secure an indoor training space and a tournament loomed close, the players bundled up and took the field anyway — snow and all.
“It was very slick,” said coach Julie Halvorsen. “We were like little penguins running around out there.”
While cleats proved less effective on snow-covered turf, the team’s commitment never wavered. Halvorsen said the players embraced the challenge and continued to show up ready to work, even in difficult conditions — a mindset that carried them through a postseason run that would make North Tahoe soccer history.

After a winning regular season, the Mega Knights were selected by their local AYSO region to represent North Lake Tahoe at the Cookies Tournament in Carson City in October. The team went on to win the U14 boys division, defeating Bishop in the championship game.
That victory earned the Mega Knights an invitation to represent the entire AYSO Region 2F — which includes western Nevada and east-central California — at the Foster City AYSO Section 2 Tournament last weekend. There, the team made history by becoming the first North Lake Tahoe boys team to win the Section 2 title, defeating regional core teams.
“I was fortunate to have some really strong athletes who really came together as a team and were able to play very well together,” Halvorsen said.
The Mega Knights opened the tournament with two 5-0 shutout wins on the first day. On the second day, they advanced past the semifinals with a 2-1 victory before securing the championship in a dramatic 1-0 win, scoring the deciding goal in the final seconds of the match.
“These kids came together and overcame so many obstacles — from practicing in the snow to raising funds to make sure every player could attend the tournament,” said Molly Attolico, whose son is on the team. “It was the true spirit of our community coming together to give the team this opportunity.”
