EAT This Week: Full Belly Deli’s Cuban Gnar

To try and decide each week where and what to eat in and around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.

Ask me on any given day what my favorite sandwich is and I’m answering with Cubano. So, if you were to tell me that I can get all the feels of a Cuban sandwich and marry that up with a breakfast burrito, I’m all in and twice on Sundays. It’s also, coincidentally, this week’s feature.

All wrapped up in a flour tortilla are black forest ham, mojo pork, black beans, pepper jack cheese, a fried egg, hash brown, green chiles, and southwest sauce. And just because you can, I added in their mojo mustard to give it a little tangy and citrusy pop.

I will tell you that it was hard for me not to get excited about this dish. I realized I was halfway through the burrito just eating away before I realized I hadn’t taken any notes – which is usually a great sign. The meat is salty and balanced by the mojo while the egg adds in a subtle richness, and the southwest sauce brings in a touch of heat. The black beans and green chiles are a welcome addition to Cubano Sandwich Island and from now on every time I’m eating that sandwich, I’m going to wonder if these two ingredients would make it better.

If you can’t guess, I was a big fan of this dish. The slight crust on the exterior of the tortilla gives it texture, but maybe more important, gives the whole dish body so you don’t have to worry about it falling apart. You can simply go to town and eat away – which I might have to do again soon.
