Jake’s on the Lake reopens for one last hurrah

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – After months of uncertainty, one of Tahoe City’s most recognizable waterfront restaurants is getting one last season in the sun.

Jake’s on the Lake has reopened for what ownership is calling its final summer, giving residents, longtime employees and visitors one last opportunity to celebrate a restaurant that has been part of the community for nearly five decades.

The reopening comes after a complicated and often uncertain offseason that left questions about whether the restaurant would be able to operate again.

Jeff Hill, one of the restaurant’s managing partners, described the process as a rocky road marked by unforeseen complications and delays that pushed back decisions about the restaurant’s future.

Despite the uncertainty, most of the restaurant’s staff has returned for the season. Employees were told from the outset that the reopening would serve as “Jake’s last hurrah,” framing the summer as both a celebration and a farewell. For many longtime workers, coming back felt like returning home.

“The sentiment has really been more gratitude that we’re even back at all,” Hill said. “Some of the longer standing employees have said that reopening feels so normal it’s hard to imagine the restaurant ever closed.”

The restaurant’s seasonal workforce traditionally swells from about 50 employees to more than 100 during the summer months, creating an atmosphere Hill compares to summer camp.

“It’s this vibe that has that summer camp fun energy,” he added.

The current plan is for Jake’s to remain open through the end of October, though the restaurant acknowledges the timeline could still shift.

Guests can expect a familiar Jake’s experience, but with some new additions in the kitchen. The restaurant recently welcomed chef and Oakland native Ronnie Miranda, a Culinary Institute of America graduate who has appeared on several television programs. Miranda is leading a menu that blends new culinary influences while preserving the restaurant’s longtime identity.

“We’re not trying to totally revamp the concept to the point where you wouldn’t know that this is still Jake’s,” said Hill.

The restaurant is also rolling out several summer promotions and events. Midweek happy hours are being offered to attract local customers, and a major deck-opening celebration is scheduled for June 12 which will feature live music and mark the unofficial start of the summer season.

Beyond the food and festivities, the restaurant hopes the final season serves as a chance for the community to reflect on what Jake’s has meant to Tahoe City over the past 48 years.

“This was important to us,” Hill said. “To celebrate this place and celebrate this town and make this something that we could all really revel in.”

The restaurant’s final chapter arrives at a time when many longtime residents see significant change on the horizon. For some, Jake’s represents more than a restaurant. It is a landmark tied to decades of memories, family gatherings and summer traditions.

As the final season unfolds, Hill hopes the focus remains on celebration rather than farewell.

“We’re not just celebrating this view or the food or the people that work here. It’s all the time that it’s been here.”
