Gregory Alan Tarter passed away suddenly on March 9, 2026, in Truckee, California, at the age of 64. A devoted partner, brother, uncle, and dedicated healer, Greg left an indelible mark on the mountain community of Truckee he called home.
Born on September 1, 1961, Greg grew up in Redlands, California. He was the son of the late Dr. Robert C. Tarter, M.D., and the late Dr. Jeanne L. Tarter, Ph.D. After graduating from Redlands High School in 1980, Greg attended UC Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture in 1986. While he initially practiced in San Diego, his desire for a more personal, hands-on calling led him to nursing. He graduated from Loma Linda University with a Registered Nurse degree in 1996.
In 1998, Greg joined Tahoe-Forest Hospital in Truckee, where he found his true vocation as an Intensive Care Unit nurse. For over 25 years, his skill and compassion provided comfort to countless patients and their families during their most difficult moments.
Greg’s connection to the Tahoe region began in childhood, spent skiing at Palisades Tahoe and waterskiing on Donner Lake. In 1999, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing his “forever home” in the Tahoe-Donner neighborhood. An avid outdoorsman, Greg could often be found mountain biking, hiking, or cross-country skiing with his partner, Ellen. He took great pride in his community and his home, utilizing his landscape architecture background to maintain a beautiful yard that reflected his love for the local environment.
He is survived by his best friend and loving partner, Ellen Bjorkman, and her daughter, Julia. He also leaves behind his siblings and their partners: Robert (Lorri) Tarter, Susan (Jamie) Varner, Eric (Allison) Tarter, and Cindy (Randy) Armstrong. He was a proud uncle to Katie Jones, Stephanie Armstrong, Christopher Armstrong, Samantha Flordelis, Sarah Arlinghaus, and Eric Tarter.
Greg will be remembered most for his radiant smile, his legendary hugs, and his unique ability to make everyone in his presence feel truly seen. His spirit remains in the forests he explored and the hearts of those who loved him. In lieu of flowers, Please consider donating in Greg’s name to either of his two favorite charities: Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe hstt.org. and The Labrador Retriever Rescue of Fresno labrescuefresno.org
