EAT This Week: The Crescent Café’s Spanish Caravan
To try and decide each week where and what to eat in and around the basin can be a challenge – there are so many amazing choices. In this feature we’ll dive into dishes that will surely satisfy those hunger pangs and leave you wondering where to go next.
As a big Doors fan, it’s hard for me not to look at the name of this week’s feature and not have their song start playing in my head. It’ll likely be playing in my head the whole time I type this, but when it also makes you think about the unique and delicious bites of this sandwich, I think I can live with that.
Starting with the ciabatta bread, one side is slathered with their house made fig spread and the other with sour cream. In between, you have thinly sliced salami, Manchego cheese and peppery arugula piled high.

Now you might think you know these ingredients, but you don’t know them configured in this way – unless you’ve already had the Spanish Caravan experience. The saltiness from the salami balances nicely against the sweetness from the fig jam and the savory nuttiness plays extremely well against the tanginess of the sour cream and slightly spicy arugula. This sandwich is like Oprah handing out flavors. You all know the meme, so I’ll save you the play-by-play.
After tasting as many dishes as I have, I’m always surprised when I get something that seems familiar but gets turned on its head just enough to give me an unforeseen eating experience. Consider this one of those times. I might have to see this sandwich again and again. I swear if you sing that last sentence (and know the song), you’ll get it.
