TTUSD proposes school parcel tax increase for November ballots
TRUCKEE, Calif. – The Tahoe Truckee Unified School District is proposing a $40 increase to a local school parcel tax that may hit ballots in November.
Voters originally passed the annual tax in 1988 and subsequent renewals. The current renewal, passed in 2018, is set to expire at the end of the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
If voters pass the proposed measure in November, it would renew the tax and increase it from $148 to $188 with annual consumer price index increases.
The new measure, if voted in, would take effect July 1, 2027 and replace the prior measure a year early.
District staff explained at the meeting that the intention behind replacing it a year early is to provide time to reassess other opportunities if it did not pass.
The district cites historically unstable and inadequate state funding, as well as a need for additional and supplemental funding, as reasons for the measure.
Ensuring quality education and reducing the impact of budget cuts are other benefits the tax would provide to the district.
The renewal would be in effect for nine years.
The district says it has so far received support from a broad coalition of community members and leaders who desire to maintain vital programs for students.
The item comes before the board for final decision on June 24, before going to the ballot in November.
