A number of young local ski racers were recently announced to the 2014 Far West Ski Team and Far West Development Team. The Far West Ski Association also recognized its academic standouts.

The Far West Ski Team is made up of 12 of the top racers in the Far West ranks.

They include five girls and seven boys — Julia Bjorkman, Julia Cashell, Hannah Johnson, Madeline Johnson, Naomi Kelley, Garret Driller, Scotty Lebel, Erik Arvidsson, Riley Plant, Patrick Romano, Marc Talbott and Cody Wilson.

All the athletes are U18s and older and are low point holders in multiple disciplines. Two of the racers were U16 Regional Championship discipline winners in Alaska, and many placed highly at the U18 Nationals during the 2013 season.

They will receive a Far West Ski Team jacket and benefits towards race entries and lift tickets for the upcoming season. These 12 skiers are held to high standards in representing the Far West Division and beyond.

The Far West Development Team, meanwhile, recognizes developing juniors in the Far West. The 2014 squad is made up of five male skiers and five female skiers.

They include Claire Deangeli, Lauren Dunn, Nikita Norton, Natalie Riffel, Sierra Ryder, Nico Monforte, Michael Cooper, Kirk Carlson, Luke Winters and Kyle Moffat.

Many of the skiers are also scholars. In fact, a total of 74 skiers were named to the Far West Academic Team, which is made up of athletes who have competed at the U16 age class or older during the 2013 season and have maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher.

These students compete at all levels from divisional racing up to U.S. Nationals and U.S. Ski Team members.

“The Association takes great pride in its many athletes and is equally proud of the academic successes of many of our racers,” said Far West Board President Paul Abbott. “Congratulations to all of these athletes on their academic successes.”
