Stacey Cook sharp again in super G

Staff and U.S. Ski Team report

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland — Two-time Olympian Stacey Cook of Truckee continued to make strides in super G on Saturday as she jumped from the 37th start position to finish 16th in St. Moritz.

The result marked the second straight weekend Cook has made a big move in super G, as she vaulted from 38th to 18th last Sunday in the Alpine World Cup super G in Lake Louise.

“I’ve just been on a mission all summer to get better at super G,” said Cook, who now skis out of Mammoth. “I’ve been OK at it for too long and I’m ready to step it up. The big move-ups are the first step. I’m trying to get in that top-30 starting position and get some better starts and then hopefully some tops 10s, maybe top fives by the end of the year.”

Tina Weirather of Lichtenstein, who was second in last weekends super G, won the race, while Kajsa Kling of Sweden finished second from bib 44 and Anna Fenninger of Austria was third.

Olympic champion Julia Mancuso of Squaw Valley was 20th, Leanne Smith did not finish and Laurenne Ross was disqualified for a binding violation.

Four-time World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn, meanwhile, opted to skip St. Moritz in favor of training for the upcoming downhill in Val d’Isere, France — a race she’s won three times.

Mancuso records best result of season

Mancuso made another leap toward her champion-level form Sunday, as she led the U.S. Ski Team with a 12th-place finish in the St. Moritz giant slalom. It was Mancuso’s best World Cup finish this season.

“We were definitely having troubles with her (Mancuso’s) setup, but you can see that we’re getting closer,” said U.S. Women’s Alpine Head Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. “It’s very positive that we’re heading in the right direction with the setup for her. She feels really comfortable now, so it’s just building confidence, training and getting used to it. It was a big step forward today.”

Reigning NorAm overall champion Megan McJames landed her first Alpine World Cup points of the season in 23rd.

Slalom World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who scored the first World Cup giant slalom podium of her career two weeks ago in Beaver Creek, Colo., started bib one in the opening run and slid off course over a roll and did not finish.

Tessa Worley of France and Beaver Creek winner Jessica Lindell-Vikarby of Sweden went 1-2 on the sun-soaked 2017 Alpine World Ski Championships venue.
