Northstar California Resort announced today it will charge guests to park at its Village View Lot this upcoming winter season.

The change, according to the resort, was made to help reduce congestion on Northstar Drive. Guests can still park for free at Castle Peak Lot, which holds roughly half the resort’s total parking spaces, and then board one of the resort’s shuttles to the village.

“It is our priority to provide the best possible experience for our guests and their families,” Deirdra Walsh, vice president and general manager of Northstar California, said in a news release. “Through a conscious decision to control our parking resource, we expect to significantly reduce traffic flow on Northstar Drive, which will ultimately improve our parking and transportation experience for guests.”

Guests seeking to park in the Village View Lot, which is just northwest of the village, will be charged $10 Monday through Friday, and $20 on weekends and holidays. The lower village lot will remain $20 cash Monday through Friday, and $40 cash on weekends and holidays. Northstar’s Platinum Valet will remain at $60. Employees of the resort will continue to park for free in designated areas.

“We want to implement a plan that best preserves the available parking options at the resort for our guests and employees,” Tony Karwowski, director of base area operations, said in the release. “This plan creates a better experience for guests by providing more consistent availability to parking, which offers better access to the Village at Northstar, and ultimately, skiing and riding.”

Guests parking in Village View make payments via the Passport Parking app, and Passport Parking kiosks. There will be no entry gates, allowing for more fluid movement of traffic.

In addition to relieving congestion on Northstar Drive, the resort said it’s also encouraging guests to carpool, rideshare, and make use of local shuttle options and public transportation.

“Northstar has a strong presence in Truckee and the Tahoe Region, and we gladly support innovative leadership from the private sector in implementing programs like this new parking program,” said Jaime Wright, executive director of Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association, in a news release. “We know from experience in other mountain resort regions that paid parking encourages increased transit ridership and ridesharing, which will ultimately help to relieve the known Truckee-Tahoe congestion that exists in the area during winter.”
