Obituary: Bernard "Butch" H. Martin

Born in Vallejo, Calif. to Bernard and Katherine Martin April 30, 1940, raised in Hayward, and attended Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.
He passed away Jan. 30, 2009 at his home in Colfax after a long and courageous battle with emphysema. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Bunny, and adoring children David and Shanna Rickert of McCall, Idaho, Kathy and Wim Bos of Sacramento and Donny Rickert of Harvard, Idaho. He also has five wonderful grandchildren who were the shining stars of his life, Amanda and Matthew Rickert, Wim Bos, Austin and Rebecca Rickert. Sister Frances Headrick of Salem, Ore., sister-in-law Jeanne Tavares of Sacramento, preceded in death by sister Louise Threde.
Butch served as a military police for the Army, working for President Eisenhower and President Kennedy. After being discharged from the Army, he moved to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe where he built custom homes with Frank Stella until his retirement. Then he and Bunny moved to Colfax, Calif. and being an avid gardener, he finally found his “Garden of Eden.”
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Auburn, at 10:30 a.m., in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Lung Association.
