Truckee’s only movie theater to shut down

David Bunker

Truckee’s lone movie theater will close in April, and the space will be converted into three shops, according to theater owner Todd Bloomhuff. The decision was made by the building’s owner who wants to renovate the theater space and put in retail stores, Bloomhuff said.

“This is, in my opinion, a sad day for the community,” Bloomhuff said. “We are losing one of our few entertainment venues.”A representative of Truckee River Associates, the leasing agent for the space, declined to comment on the situation.Bloomhuff has owned Truckee’s Martis Village theater – along with theaters in Kings Beach, Tahoe City and Incline Village – for three and a half years. Bloomhuff said he believes the Truckee theater has been in operation for approximately 25 years.

Although the one-screen cinema only made enough money to break even, Bloomhuff said that he was hoping to keep the Truckee location open.”We’d love to be staying in Truckee,” said Bloomhuff, who has investigated other locations to re-open the theater in town but has not found a suitable location.

It is hard for theaters to compete with retail shops that can afford to pay higher rents, Bloomhuff said.”Theaters aren’t as profitable as smaller shops or boutiques are,” said Bloomhuff. The Incline Village, Kings Beach and Tahoe City cinemas will remain open, he said.
